Watch and Listen

Fiance and I watched the movie Changeling starring Angelina Jolie.  The movie plot, as described by IMDB, features grief-stricken mother taking on the LAPD to her own detriment when it stubbornly tries to pass off an obvious impostor as her missing child, while also refusing to give up hope that she will find him one day.

There were several very triggering moments for me in the film. In my opinion, Angelina (and note I am not a fan of hers largely due to her womb raiding via adoption) did an excellent job portraying the grief stricken Christine Collins.  I intend to expand on some of the triggers in future posts.  It really should be watched by anyone that wants to understand how a mother can be railroaded by the authorities (in the movies case right into a psych ward when her only ailments were being female and a mother without a husband wanting to find her child).  It was particularly disturbing to read the movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, is based on a true story. Distrubing but so not suprising to me, given my own experiences with motherhood and authorities that want you to see things their way.

There is a moment in the movie where Angelina is clearly trapped by the doctor in the psych ward. No matter what she says or does, she is damned and the authorities have control of her destiny. Reminded me of the feeling I had when Colleen Rogers reminded me that I was in a maternity home, no job, no one to support or care for me and oh yeah, remember that promissory note my mother signed?  Really, HOW exactly did I think I was going to walk out of St. Josephs Hospital with my child was what she inferred.

In Angelina/Christine Collins case she had a powerful force on the outside supporting her.

If only.

The movie also brought to memory a song by Enya If I Could Be Where Are. I discovered this song right about the time I began my active search for my daughter.  Later, I made an animated photo college of her pictures through the years of her life, set to this song.  Its a tear jerker (I believe I shared with some of you. I dont post here as it contains photos of her that were shared with me and are not mine to share further with the internet).

In summary, I recommend the movie Changeling and also the song by Enya (which does not appear in the movie but certainly could have).  Oh, and if my blog post isnt enough to bait you, Angelina wears some rocking outfits in the movie. Wow. What a wardrobe. Made me want to live in the 20s so I could wear those dreses and have roller skates on at work.

6 Thoughts.

  1. I saw the movie some time ago. Agree, very triggering. Agree, not a big Angelina fan. But well worth watching for the message.

    P.S. I love your new photo. It’s how I’ve always pictured you…

    • Denise – Tx. Must give photo credit to easter house adoptee/photographer extraordinaire Joanna Fisher. And pictured me? You have seen me before, no? I dont exactly hide. : )

  2. I wanted to watch the movie when it came out, but was afraid of it being triggering. Now that I can watch it in the safety of my home, I will have to watch it. (the note re the wardrobe made the decision for me!)

Thanks for the link to the song. I have never heard it before ~ it’s beautiful & haunting.

“If I could be close beside you, if I could be where you are, if I could reach out and touch you” Those words, just the thought of that one day happening, takes my breath away…

    • Susie – Absolutely agree. You got the sentiment exactly. I should email you the slide show I made. It fits it so well.
