Negative + Positive = Negative

"You know you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it's still going to stink …"  - Barack Obama

I found a fabulous flckr photo stream called Yo Chicago that has some truly fabulous pictures of Chicago.  I could spend hours looking at them all. They bring back so many memories of where I lived – Lincoln Park, Lakeview East, Ravenswood, and more.

Imagine my surprise when I stumble upon pictures of the hospital my daughter was born and abandoned at?

Yes. Go ahead. Cringe. I hate that word too.

Abandoned.

Did I abandon her (from my perspective AT THAT TIME)?.  No.

From hers? Um. Yeah.

What else do you call it when a mother leaves a child with strangers and walks away from that child?

I realize the nice word is "adoption". I dont agree. What is that saying "lipstick on a pig"?

Yeah. Adoption.  Legalized abandonment. Hence, lipstick on a pig.

Guh.

That picture was quite triggering.

3 Thoughts.

  1. Yeah… legalized abandonment.
The adult in me is saying “Now come on, you know better, she didn’t abandon you” and the infant is saying “Yes, yes she did, one day she was there and the next day she was gone.”
Oh, adoption, what inner turmoil you cause…

  2. Suz, forgive me if I’m misunderstanding…
YOU are the one labeling that photo as the place where you abandoned your daughter. I know it feels that way sometimes. But don’t do that to yourself. It’s not the full and true story. Nor is that you “gave her” for adoption.
We have enough problems being labeled by others. We must not mislabel our own selves or situations.
    Hugs, D.
